Just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should.

The UK hard rock/metal magazine Kerrang! is taking votes (write-in) for the Kerrang! Awards 2009. And, because Tokio Hotel fans have a tendency to insist that they win everything, always, appropriate or not, by any means necessary, there’s a big voting action to put them on top in the six categories not specified for British artists or Newcomer.

Did I mention this is a hard rock magazine looking to award bands in the genres of metal, thrash, punk, goth, and other hard rock styles?

Let’s be clear: Kerrang! will not start respecting Tokio Hotel because thousands of fangirls power vote for them. It will  just piss them off (again). Tokio Hotel is not appropriate genre-wise to sweep the Kerrang! Awards. Yes, they play some rock. But this will only serve to bring on harsh negative reaction from hard rock fans. Mark my words. A lot of these bands don’t have many opportunities for recognition because MTV and major awards shows overlook them. Let this one go.

    Eh, I sort of agree.

TH will definitely not be winning any Kerrang! awards, no matter if the voting is done fairly or everyone uses a program, simply because Kerrang! is run by asses.

That said, I don’t think an opportunity to support the band should be avoided simply because it will make some people mad. Nobody would care to piss off the magazine if they hadn’t been complete jerks in the first place, making ignorant statements about the bands and the fans.

Except that Tokio Hotel is not a hard rock/metal band. They’re a melodic pop rock band. Kerrang! doesn’t even feature pop punk like Green Day and Fallout Boy in their Band section. I don’t think fans should worry about making people mad because they win so many awards, but I don’t think we should set the band up for ridicule by trying to overtake a Metalhead site, either.

If it’s actually about pissing off Kerrang! for being dicks, though, I’m all for it.

      Oh baby.

If they had made an announcement like ‘We don’t consider Tokio Hotel a hard rock band and therefore will no longer accept votes for the band,’ I’d be a little more understanding. But they’ve made plenty of crappy statements. Wish I had teh proof, but I got nothing right now.

So for me, it’s more about pissing them off while doing nothing wrong. I know for sure TH won’t win, because 4chan is nominating random people like the Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff (who don’t even belong in the rock genre) with voting programs, so the whole website can go to shit for all I care. Getting them angry, and I can’t wait to see the outcome.

Yep. I heard about the Fresh Prince thing. It doesn’t matter that the Fresh Prince is out of the genre, because it’s a prank, like Best Act Ever at the EMAs (and don’t get me started on that).

I think Kerrang has a wank attitude… but as a fan of punk and metal as well, I’m also pretty familiar with the attitude, and I think trying to force TH into the Kerrang Awards only makes the hate more intense. The write-in option is intended to benefit hard rock/metal bands who would otherwise be overlooked, so they can see which bands in the genre are getting a lot of buzz. They’re probably going to have to scrap it because of all of this, especially now with 4chan in on it.

It’s just… this is a genre that gets abused a lot with other music awards, MTV, etc. Metal gets kicked to the side of the road a lot. As much as I love TH, I don’t think it’s unfair that Kerrang wants to keep the focus on their core demographic.

I completely agree about rock getting the shaft most of the time. It just feels like Kerrang is getting what they asked for with the 4chan stuff.
